These pages describe a device specially commissioned by Colin Legg for making multi-camera time-lapse sequences. It is currently being used on the Outside In IMAX project.
The gadget accepts serial (RS232) commands, executing the desired exposure of up to eight individually addressable cameras via Bulb Mode. The ability to control image exposure using Bulb mode is sometimes referred to as “Bramping” (short for bulb-ramping). Shutter feedback is used to provide the sub-millisecond timing precision required to produce smooth exposure changes over the course of a time-lapse sequence. It is the same principle used by the stand-alone bulb-ramping gadget, Little Bramper.
The gadget simply waits for serial commands, it doesn’t have its own built-in intervalometer. For example, if it receives the string “B1000” the gadget will fire all enabled camera outputs for 1000ms. Upon completion, it awaits the next command.
Eclipse Orchestrator (EO) is Windows software that can be used to script camera exposures. Originally designed for photography eclipses in an automated fashion, it has also found a use in the closely related field of time-lapsing. Not only can EO control tethered cameras, it can also send serial commands to our gadget. While EO does not fire the cameras, it does take care of the intervalometry (via prewritten scripts) and perform the necessary ISO changes required to fully exploit the capabilities of the cameras. The author of EO, Fred Bruenjes, was kind enough to add features to EO that made our lives easier.
